Triumph GT6 buyer’s guide: Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3

There are some cars that look as if they were created by a committee, and there are others that appear to have slipped past the committee while everyone was at lunch. The Triumph GT6 belongs firmly in the second group. It began with a Michelotti fastback body for the Spitfire, but the extra weight made the little four cylinder car rather too leisurely. Triumph solved that problem in the most appealing way possible, by squeezing a 2.0 litre straight six under the bonnet and creating a miniature grand tourer.

 

The result was compact, handsome, usefully quick and blessed with a soundtrack far more expensive than the car itself. People still call it the poor man’s E Type, which is meant kindly but misses the point. The GT6 has its own character, its own competition history in the Spitfire shape that inspired it, and its own particular collection of places where rust likes to hold meetings. Buy well and it is one of the most rewarding British classics around. Buy badly and you may become much more familiar with welding invoices than you ever intended.

Which GT6 are you actually looking at?

 

The Mk1 arrived in 1966 with 95 bhp, a beautifully simple shape, bonnet side louvres and the swing axle rear suspension inherited from the Spitfire. It is the earliest, prettiest and most valuable version to many eyes, but it also has the most demanding handling at the limit. The Mk2 followed in 1968 with 104 bhp, raised bumpers and a much better rear suspension arrangement using lower wishbones and Rotoflex rubber couplings. It kept the rounded tail, so it is often regarded as the sweet spot of the range.

 

The Mk3 appeared in 1970 with a flatter bonnet, recessed door handles and the sharper chopped tail shared with the Spitfire MkIV. Early Mk3 cars retained the Rotoflex rear suspension, but from commission number KE20001 in February 1973 Triumph fitted a simpler swing spring setup. Late cars also gained larger self adjusting rear brakes and a servo. Production across all three versions totalled 40,926 cars, so none is common now. Do not trust the registration year alone when identifying one, because cars could sit before being registered and many have been altered since.

 

Start with the chassis, not the shiny paint

 

The GT6 has a separate backbone chassis, and that is where a proper inspection must begin. Get the car onto a lift and examine the outriggers, the main rails around the differential, the rear frame sections and the areas where the chassis meets the bulkhead. Look for swelling seams, thin metal, fresh underseal and repairs that resemble a dropped plate of chips. A replacement chassis or a proper body off repair is possible, but it turns a cheap car into a serious restoration very quickly.

 

The body tub has plenty of its own danger areas. Check the bulkhead, sills, floors, battery box and the floor directly beneath it. Then inspect the wheel arches, door bottoms, rear corners, boot floor, hatch aperture and the double skinned leading edge of the roof above the windscreen. Open the vast forward hinging bonnet and inspect its frame, mounting points and inner arches. Poor panel gaps may indicate careless restoration or old crash damage, so look at the front chassis rails for ripples and make sure the bonnet sits squarely rather than attempting to leave the car in stages.

 

The straight six should be smooth, not theatrical

 

Start the engine from cold. A brief rattle while oil pressure builds is common, especially with the original canister filter, but prolonged knocking or rumbling is not charming period character. Listen again when the engine is fully warm because restricted oil supply to the valve gear can wear the rocker shaft and produce a persistent top end clatter. Blue smoke under acceleration suggests bore wear, while a cloud after the throttle closes can point towards worn valve guides. A compression test is useful if anything sounds doubtful, but even readings across all six cylinders matter more than one magic number.

 

Check crankshaft end float by watching the front pulley while an assistant presses and releases the clutch. Visible movement needs proper measurement and investigation because badly worn thrust washers can damage the block. Oil leaks are common around the timing cover, sump and rear of the engine, but a heavy coating of fresh oil is still a fault, not factory rust prevention. Inspect the radiator, hoses, water pump and coolant, then let the car idle until fully hot. The temperature should remain stable and the heater should work. Warm legs are normal in a GT6; boiling coolant is not.

Carburettors, fuel and the cooling system

 

Twin Zenith Stromberg carburettors were standard, and a healthy pair should provide a steady idle and clean acceleration without coughing, hesitation or black smoke. Poor running can be caused by tired diaphragms, worn linkages, air leaks or years of enthusiastic adjustment by somebody armed with a screwdriver and confidence. Check the choke operates correctly, inspect the fuel hoses and investigate any petrol smell immediately. Modern ethanol resistant hoses and sound clips are sensible, but the fuel pump, carburettor seals and filler connections deserve attention too.

 

Cooling problems are often blamed on the radiator before anybody checks the basics. Look for rusty coolant, collapsed hoses, staining around the water pump and evidence that the system has been filled carefully without trapping air. An electric fan or alloy radiator can be useful, but neither excuses an engine that overheats on the test drive. Also inspect the removable transmission cover and its seals. A badly fitted cover allows engine bay fumes and even more heat into a cabin that was already designed with all the ventilation of a well furnished oven.

 

Gearbox, overdrive and differential

 

The gearbox is one of the GT6’s weaker areas. A grumble in first, second and third that disappears in fourth usually points towards worn layshaft bearings, while crunching changes reveal tired synchromesh. Test every gear under acceleration and on the overrun, making sure it does not jump out. A vague lever may only need inexpensive linkage bushes, but never assume the cheapest explanation. Rebuilding the gearbox is perfectly possible, although it is much nicer when somebody else has already paid for it and kept the invoice.

 

Overdrive was optional and is desirable, especially if the car will travel beyond the local Sunday breakfast meet. It should engage cleanly in third and fourth and release without slipping or delay. Electrical switches and wiring can cause simple faults, but price a dead unit as though it needs proper mechanical work until proven otherwise. Listen for differential whine, then move gently between forward and reverse to expose clonks from worn universal joints or driveline play. A little noise is familiar; a full percussion section is telling you something.

 

Suspension, steering and brakes

 

A Mk1 needs respect rather than fear. Its swing axle rear suspension can produce dramatic camber changes if the driver lifts suddenly in a fast bend, especially on poor tyres or tired suspension. The Mk2 and early Mk3 Rotoflex arrangement is more composed, but its rubber couplings must be inspected for cracking and distortion. Failure can damage costly driveshaft components. On every version, look for a sagging transverse rear spring, worn radius arm bushes, leaking dampers and play in the wheel bearings.

 

At the front, check the wishbone bushes, anti roll bar links, steering rack mounts and vertical link trunnions. The trunnions require EP90 gear oil rather than ordinary grease, and neglect can allow corrosion and serious wear. The brakes use front discs and rear drums, with a servo only on late cars unless one has been added. The car should stop straight with a firm pedal. Check the solid pipes, flexible hoses, wheel cylinders and both master cylinders for leaks, particularly where escaping brake fluid can strip paint from the bulkhead and invite corrosion.

Wheels, tyres and modifications underneath

 

Many GT6s have acquired alloy or wire wheels, and appearance alone does not tell you whether they suit the car. Incorrect offset can make tyres rub the arches or upset the steering, while worn wire wheel splines can produce alarming movement. Check every tyre for age, cracking and uneven wear, not merely legal tread depth. A matching set of sensible quality tyres in an appropriate size will improve a GT6 more than most shiny performance parts advertised beside them.

 

Suspension upgrades are common and can make the car safer and more enjoyable, but only when the parts work together. Randomly stiff springs, cheap dampers and elderly bushes can create a car that feels exciting in exactly the wrong way. Inspect any conversion to telescopic rear dampers, constant velocity driveshafts or a different spring arrangement carefully. Ask who supplied the parts, who fitted them and whether the geometry was checked afterwards. An invoice from a recognised specialist is more persuasive than the seller saying his mate races go karts.

 

Inside, electrics and whether you actually fit

 

The GT6 cabin is intimate, which is a flattering way of saying there is not much of it. Tall or broad drivers should spend proper time in the seat before buying, because a short test drive can hide discomfort that becomes obvious after an hour. Check the seat frames, runners, belts, door catches and rear hatch. Carpets, seat covers and trim panels are available, but replacing everything soon adds up. Original trim in usable condition is worth preserving, and a sliding fabric roof is wonderful for ventilation if its frame, drains and surrounding metal are sound.

 

The electrical system is simple, but decades of extra switches, alarm wiring and household connectors can make it mysterious. Test the lights, indicators, horn, wipers, heater fan, gauges and charging system. Inspect the fuse box, earth points and bullet connectors, then look under the dashboard for taped joints and unsupported wires. A complete new loom is available if necessary, but fitting one involves far more than placing it beside the car and hoping it feels encouraged.

Originality and popular upgrades

 

A larger 2.5 litre Triumph engine is a common conversion and can suit the GT6 very well, delivering effortless torque. It also asks more of the gearbox, differential, cooling system and brakes, so the quality of the whole conversion matters. Confirm that the engine number and capacity agree with the V5C. The same applies to five speed gearboxes, different rear suspension systems and cars converted into roadsters. Triumph never sold a GT6 convertible, however convincing the finished car may look.

 

Sensible improvements include a spin on oil filter adaptor, electronic ignition, a well designed cooling fan, modern fuel hoses and a quality stainless exhaust. None should automatically count against a car, but poor workmanship always should. Originality usually matters most on a scarce, excellent Mk1 or Mk2, while a sound Mk3 with sympathetic upgrades can make a superb car for regular use. Decide whether you want a preserved collector car or one to drive, then judge modifications against that purpose rather than somebody else’s idea of purity.

 

Paperwork and the test drive

 

Match the commission number, engine number and registration details to the V5C, and ask for restoration photographs if the seller claims the body has been removed from the chassis. A thick folder of invoices is more useful than a row of unexplained service stamps. Check the official MOT history even if the car is now exempt, because records since 2005 can reveal mileage changes, recurring corrosion and advisories that never quite went away. All GT6s are old enough to qualify for historic vehicle rules, but substantial modifications can affect MOT exemption, and exemption never removes the owner’s duty to keep the car roadworthy.

 

Drive the car from cold and allow enough time for it to reach full temperature. Check steering response, every gear, overdrive, braking, coolant temperature and hot oil pressure if a gauge is fitted. Accelerate and lift off gently while listening for driveline knocks, then make sure the car tracks straight and settles properly after bumps. Back at the seller’s home, look underneath for fresh leaks and check for fumes in the cabin. A specialist inspection on a lift is money well spent. If the seller refuses one, they have performed the inspection for you by revealing the biggest fault.

What should you pay?

 

A July 2026 snapshot of UK adverts placed usable GT6s at roughly £9,000 to £12,000, with appealing road cars commonly advertised between about £13,000 and £18,000. Excellent restored examples and especially desirable cars were generally asking £20,000 to £25,000, sometimes more. Projects ranged from cheap piles of ambitious metal to incomplete restorations with surprisingly confident price tags. These are asking prices rather than guaranteed sale values, so compare the live market and judge every car on structure, workmanship and history.

 

For maximum early charm, buy the best Mk1 you can find and learn its handling before trying to impress anybody. For the most tempting blend of rounded styling, 104 bhp and improved suspension, the Mk2 is the connoisseur’s choice. For easier availability and regular use, a sound Mk3 is difficult to beat, with the late swing spring car offering simpler rear suspension. Whichever version wins you over, buy the best chassis and body you can afford. Engines can be rebuilt and interiors renewed. Rust, on the other hand, has excellent job security.
