There is a special kind of affection involved in agreeing to travel in somebody else’s classic car. It says, “I like you enough to sit beside an engine that may be older than my parents, while pretending the smell of warm petrol is completely normal.” It is not a lift. It is a small act of trust, with a picnic blanket in the boot.

The passenger has a difficult job. The owner has spent weeks polishing the car, months explaining it and years insisting it has never once let them down. The passenger must now climb in, locate a seat belt that may have an archaeological importance and behave as if the noise from the gearbox is simply part of the music.

![passenger\_hero\_mgb](https://classiccarbuyer.co.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/passenger_hero_mgb.jpg?width=2253&height=1267&name=passenger_hero_mgb.jpg)

*The passenger is smiling because they have enjoyed the trip. They are also smiling because it has stopped.*

**Never ask if it is reliable**

This is rule one. You may wonder whether the car will complete the journey. Of course you do. It is making a sound like a cupboard being dragged across gravel and the owner has just opened the window to “let it breathe”. But asking if it is reliable is like asking a magician where he keeps the rabbit. It spoils the mood and may start an explanation that lasts until the next county.

Instead, say something helpful. “It has a lovely character” is always safe. “That noise sounds purposeful” is another excellent choice. Avoid “is it meant to do that?” unless the bonnet has opened while moving or a small fire has appeared between the seats. Even then, consider whether the owner might call it a feature.

**Accept that fresh air is part of the package**

Modern cars have climate control. Classic cars have climate negotiation. One person is warm, one person is cold and somebody has decided that opening a small window by three centimetres will cure a smell that began in 1978. The passenger should never complain. The passenger should simply enjoy the view, breathe through their mouth and wonder whether the owner has noticed the faint aroma of hot oil on their sleeve.

The smell is rarely one thing. It may be petrol, old vinyl, a damp wool mat and a little bit of countryside that entered through the floor last Tuesday. Owners cannot smell it because it is their car. It has become part of their personality, like a favourite jacket or a strong opinion about unleaded fuel. Do not mention this. You would not tell somebody their beloved dog smells faintly of wet pavement.

*The window is not open because of the petrol smell. It is open because the view is lovely.*

**The dashboard is only a suggestion**

The passenger in a classic car should not expect information in the modern sense. There may be a speedometer, a fuel gauge and several little lights that resemble a festive display in a village hall. Some will work. Some will be decorative. One may come on whenever the owner changes gear, but nobody has got around to investigating because it has done that for fifteen years.

The real dashboard information comes from the owner. They will listen to the engine, glance at the temperature needle and announce that everything is perfect in a tone that suggests the opposite. Your task is to nod, sit calmly and resist looking at the map every time the car approaches a hill. If you are given the map, remember that it may be older than the route.

**Learn the art of the brave face**

There will be a moment when the car takes a corner with more enthusiasm than you had planned for. The owner will grin. You will grip the door handle, then discover it has a mind of its own. This is the time for quiet dignity. A sharp intake of breath is permitted. A shriek is not. The car has survived several decades, which makes it extremely confident about its own abilities.

A good passenger praises the things that matter. Mention the view from the windscreen. Say the seats are surprisingly comfortable. Congratulate the owner when the brakes work. Do not compare the ride to a washing machine full of bricks, even if you have developed a detailed opinion on that subject. You will be invited again, and the next journey may be in the rain.

![passenger\_dashboard\_spitfire](https://classiccarbuyer.co.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/passenger_dashboard_spitfire.jpg?width=2304&height=1536&name=passenger_dashboard_spitfire.jpg)

*The map is not lost. It is simply considering the route in its own time.*

**Every unscheduled stop is apparently part of the day**

At some point, the car will stop somewhere unexpected. This could be a layby, a village green or the entrance to a farm shop that mysteriously sells engine oil. The owner will lift the bonnet with great confidence and look inside for a while. Nothing is necessarily wrong. Sometimes a classic car just needs to be acknowledged.

The passenger must respond correctly. Never say, “Are we broken down?” Say, “What a nice place to stretch our legs.” Take the offered cup of tea. Admire the hedgerow. If the owner produces a screwdriver from under the seat, this is not a cause for alarm. It is merely a reminder that the car has a more active social life than most modern appliances.

**Use language with care**

There are phrases every passenger should keep ready. “It feels very direct” means the steering needs commitment. “It has a wonderful soundtrack” covers everything from exhaust burble to a loose parcel shelf. “You really feel connected to the road” is useful when there is no sound insulation and you can identify individual pebbles by size.

There are phrases to avoid. Do not say, “My friend had one of these and it was always in the garage.” Never begin a sentence with, “Would it not be better if…” This is the sort of comment that can turn a cheerful run to the pub into a three hour discussion about originality, carburettors and a man in Essex who still has the correct brake reservoir cap.

![passenger\_roadside\_volvo](https://classiccarbuyer.co.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/passenger_roadside_volvo.jpg?width=2560&height=1440&name=passenger_roadside_volvo.jpg)

*This is not a breakdown. It is a chance to enjoy the scenery and possibly use a spanner.*

**The reward is always worth it**

For all the noise, smells and occasional moments of mechanical theatre, there is nothing quite like arriving somewhere in a classic car. People wave. Children stare. Somebody will tell the owner about one their dad had. The passenger gets to step out looking slightly windswept and unexpectedly pleased with themselves, like a person who has completed a small expedition without needing a pith helmet.

That is why brave friends and relatives keep agreeing to go again. They know the journey will involve a story, a stop and at least one conversation that begins, “It has never done that before.” They also know the owner will be happy, the car will look marvellous outside a pub and the trip home will probably be better after the passenger has bought a pair of earplugs.

![passenger\_after\_drive\_capri](https://classiccarbuyer.co.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/passenger_after_drive_capri.jpg?width=2304&height=1536&name=passenger_after_drive_capri.jpg)

*Nobody remembers the smell once the car is parked outside a pub at sunset. That is the magic of a classic.*
