You are cruising along the A14, enjoying the mechanical symphony of your classic car, when suddenly that symphony turns into an alarming percussion solo followed by silence. The temperature gauge is pegged, the cabin smells distinctly of hot oil, and you find yourself coasting gracefully into a layby. Breaking down is an occupational hazard of driving a classic, but the real challenge is not the mechanical failure itself. The real challenge is maintaining your dignity while hundreds of passing motorists judge you.   When you come to a halt in a cloud of your own making, your first instinct might be to panic, weep quietly onto the steering wheel, or immediately confess your ignorance to the nearest passing lorry driver. Resist this urge. The key to a successful breakdown is theatrical confidence. You must project the aura of a seasoned engineer who has simply chosen to pause their journey for a spot of impromptu roadside maintenance, rather than someone who has just remembered they ignored a strange rattling noise for the last three hundred miles. ![05_classic_car_flatbed_recovery](https://classiccarbuyer.co.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/05_classic_car_flatbed_recovery.jpg?width=1600&height=900&name=05_classic_car_flatbed_recovery.jpg) **The art of the thoughtful stare**   The most crucial tool in your breakdown arsenal is the thoughtful stare. Once you have wrestled the bonnet open, a task that should be performed with a grim, knowing nod, as if you fully expected this particular component to fail today, you must lean over the engine bay. Do not touch anything. Everything is incredibly hot and you probably do not know what any of it does anyway. Instead, place your hands firmly on your hips, narrow your eyes, and stare intensely at the largest metal object you can see.   If another classic car owner pulls over to offer assistance, you must be ready with a plausible sounding excuse. Never say the engine just stopped. Instead, rub your chin and mutter something about the condenser giving up the ghost or the float chamber sticking again. It does not matter if your car actually has a condenser or a float chamber. The passing good Samaritan will nod sympathetically, agree that modern fuel is terrible for old seals, and drive away feeling helpful while leaving you in peace to wait for the professional in the bright yellow van. ![02_thoughtful_bonnet_stare](https://classiccarbuyer.co.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/02_thoughtful_bonnet_stare.jpg?width=1600&height=900&name=02_thoughtful_bonnet_stare.jpg) **Performing for the audience**   While you wait for recovery, you have an audience of thousands streaming past at seventy miles per hour. You owe them a performance. Occasionally produce a clean rag from the boot and wipe an already clean piece of chrome. Tap a spanner gently against the engine block. Shake your head in mild disappointment at a random hose. To the untrained eye of a passing sales executive in a modern hatchback, you look like a master craftsman communing with your machine.   However, we must briefly interrupt this theatrical masterclass for a genuine dose of reality. The A14, like any major dual carriageway or motorway, is an incredibly dangerous place to be stationary. While it is fun to pretend you are a roadside mechanical genius, your actual priority is survival. The official guidance from National Highways and the major recovery clubs is remarkably clear on this point, and it does not involve standing next to the fast lane tapping things with a spanner. ![03_theatrical_spanner_diagnosis](https://classiccarbuyer.co.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/03_theatrical_spanner_diagnosis.jpg?width=1600&height=900&name=03_theatrical_spanner_diagnosis.jpg) **The actual safety procedure**   If your classic decides to expire on a high speed road, your first job is to get as far to the left as possible. Whether that is a layby, an emergency area, or the hard shoulder, you need to turn your wheels to the left and get those hazard warning lights on immediately. If visibility is poor, keep your sidelights on too. Once stopped, you must resist the urge to open the bonnet and perform the thoughtful stare if it puts you anywhere near moving traffic.   If it is safe to do so, exit the vehicle using the passenger door, the side furthest away from the hurtling lorries. Put on a high visibility jacket if you have one, climb over the safety barrier, and wait well up the grassy bank. Do not return to the car, do not try to fix it, and absolutely never place a warning triangle on a motorway. If you are stuck in a live lane and cannot safely reach the left or exit the vehicle, keep your seatbelts on, leave the hazard lights flashing, and dial 999 immediately. ![04_waiting_safely_behind_barrier](https://classiccarbuyer.co.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/04_waiting_safely_behind_barrier.jpg?width=1600&height=900&name=04_waiting_safely_behind_barrier.jpg) **Waiting with dignity**   Once you are safely behind the barrier, you can resume your performance from a distance. Look down at your stricken classic with a mixture of fond exasperation and technical authority. When the recovery truck finally arrives, greet the driver as an equal. Explain your entirely fabricated theory about the condenser, hand over the keys, and climb into the warm cab.   You may be going home on the back of a flatbed, but you will be doing it with your pride intact.
